PROTOTYPE
INFO...
SD-35 High & Low Nose
A heavy hauler
from the mid-1960's, the SD-35 was used by many
railroads in the US for service in the coal,
refineries and chemical producing industries.
Built by the Electro-Motive Division of the
General Motors Corporation in 1964-1965, the
SD-35 had a "boxy" appearance
originated by a short underframe.
Available in low
nose and high nose versions, it was the first
six-axle EMD diesel to have the angular carbody
style. In addition, it can be identified from
similar EMD diesels by the single small fan in
between two large fans on top of the rear portion
of the long hood. All SD-35's featured horns
mounted on the roof as well as dynamic brakes,
which was a revolutionary new feature to EMD in
the 1960s.
SDP-35
With passenger
service declining in the mid-1960s, EMD made some
adjustments to the SD-35 model. The new SDP-35
was ready for service in 1965 with a steam
generator suitable for passenger service or
easily converted to freight service. The steam
generator compartment was close to the rear of
the unit. This change required modifications to
the rear access steps and the standard fuel tank
was divided into water and fuel compartments.
