Introduced in 1966, the
EMD SD40 and its family of later variations, became the
best-selling diesel of all time. The SD40 and the other 1966
line-up of EMD locos featured the new 645-series prime mover,
the first major engine change since 1939. The success of this
diesel engine and the 3000 h.p. rating have made the SD40 family
of locos the standard of American railroads. Now, over three
decades since their introduction, many of these locos are still
in regular mainline operation.
