O USRA SINGLE-SHEATHED BOX CAR

Prototype
Information:
Designed by
the United States Railway Administration during World War I,
the first of these 50-ton outside-braced boxcars was built in
October of 1918. These cars quickly became a common sight on
railroads from coast-to-coast. The USRA design was so
successful that many single-sheathed cars built through out
the 1920s were virtual copies, or "clones" with a
variation of the steel ends.
While many of the cars were
later rebuilt with steel sides to extend their service life,
several railroads used the as-built cars in maintenance of way
service well into the 1960s.
